7 Best Undercounter Ice Makers Consumer Guide & Reports

Be it a simple glass of soda or a fancy cocktail, it doesn’t taste half as good if not properly chilled. And, to chill that beautiful glass you need ice. You do have a freezer in your house but if you have a big family or if you are a distant relative of Gatsby and love to throw huge parties, that freezer is not gonna suffice.

This means your demand is higher than its production and you are often looking for some extra bags of ice. In this situation, an undercounter ice maker is an excellent addition to your home kitchen.

They can produce a big lot of ice (depending on the model you have) in a span of 24 hours and help you meet your needs be it in the office, a bar, or at home. They hardly take up any extra space and do their job while sitting silently under that counter.

There is a huge variety of ice-makers in the market and they come in all different colors and sizes. Their production rate and capacity also vary with many other features.

If you never had an ice maker before in your home, you need to be careful before buying your first. There are many things to consider before you make a choice.

Consumer Guide to Choose a Good Undercounter Ice Maker

Everyone’s home and requirements are different. That is the reason why brands make so many variations in their models. It is up to you to decide which one will suit you best.

Here is a list of important elements to consider before you go for buying one.

Placement

The first thing you need to consider is the place you are going to install your ice maker in. Unlike Portable or Countertop Ice maker, this one has to sit nicely under your counter just like your cooking range or a dishwasher.

So ask yourself if you have some extra space for it there? If not, make some, because you need it in your kitchen.

best undercounter ice maker reports

You also need to decide whether you are looking for a model that sits in your kitchen indoors or if you have intentions to install it on your patio bar or an outdoor kitchen. Because, for that, you will have to look for an ice maker specifically built for outdoor usage.

Those are built to be more durable to endure extreme weather and can produce ice no matter how hot it gets.

There are also some models available that give you the choice to install them under the counter or, if you don’t have space there, anywhere else in your home. They are called “free-standing” models.

Decide which one suits you best in terms of placement.

Ice Type and Quality

Different ice makers work differently to produce a varied range of ice. For example, crescent ice, cubes, and gourmet ice are some common types and shapes of ice that are produced in these undercounter ice makers. Every type of ice has a different shape and texture that works differently.

Let’s see how:

  • Crescent Ice is shaped like a half moon. Its shape allows it to move freely without getting packed and the liquid can easily flow around it.
  • Nugget or also called Pearl/Pellet or “Sonic Ice” is known for its soft texture which makes it easily chewable. It cools down liquids pretty quickly and for a longer time, without sticking together. If you love to chew ice, you must go for this option.
  • Flackers Ice is similar to snowflakes. It is great to be used in blenders. If you love blended cocktails and smoothies, this one is going to be of great use.

It is also used in stores to present and preserve seafood and other perishable foods. If you have to transport perishable foods and need ice to pack them, this is the right type you need.

  • Full Cube Ice is best for beverages as it cools the drinks quickly and melts slowly. It is the most common type in bars and restaurants.
  • Half Cube Ice is shaped like half cubes. It works great in self-service dispensing machines.
  • Gourmet Ice is considered a luxurious kind. It is crystal clear and uniquely shaped. It is odorless and does not melt easily and that is why it is a great choice to maintain the original taste of your whisky.

Apart from the types of ice these machines make, the quality of ice also depends upon the model of your undercounter ice-makers.

It is common sense that the ice quality is mainly dependent on the quality of water you provide to your machine, but some ice makers come with a filtration feature. It is a great option to have if you live in an area with a hard water supply.

You need to decide which type of ice suits you best. And also take into consideration the quality of water you are going to feed your machine.

Production Rate

Every ice maker has a different rate of producing ice and this too is a key element to consider before you make a purchase.

Every model comes with information on how much ice it can produce in a span of 24 hours. You need to check that the machine you choose meets your requirements.

Capacity

The capacity of an ice maker means its capability of storing ice. Some models can make a lot of ice in 24 hours (good production rate) but they don’t have enough space to store it (not enough capacity).

You need to decide what features are the best for you. If you need an ice maker to consume that ice regularly, you don’t need to worry about the capacity of your machine.

But, if you need that machine to meet your occasional needs of ice, like gatherings or parties, and you want to have enough ice storage ahead of time, you must go for a larger capacity option.

residential undercounter ice maker consumer reports

Aesthetic Side

An undercounter ice maker will surely look better if it sits well among your other appliances in the kitchen, like your dishwasher or washing machine. This is the reason most of the models come in stainless steel, white, or black color.

But, if you have a taste for bright colors, you will find a few options in them too. You will just have to look harder.

Drainage

Keep in mind that you will need to provide a drain hole to your ice maker. If the spot you intend to install your ice maker has a drain hole nearby it is all well and good. But if not, you can check for a model that has a built-in drain pump.

Although it is not something to worry about as you can always attach a drain pump to your machine, still it is a good option to have if it is coming with your ice maker.

And yet there is another option available. Some ice makers do not need a drain at all. They work by keeping the ice frozen, so if the ice is not melting, you do not need to drain the water from the melting ice.

Cleaning

It goes without saying that any appliance you have in your home needs to be cleaned every now and then. Experts recommend cleaning your ice maker after every 6 to 9 months depending on its usage.

Some machines make this process a piece of cake by providing an automatic cleaning option. All you need to do is to set it to “clean” with an easy push of a button and it does the job all by itself.

For others, you have to put in some extra effort when it is time to clean. You will have to help your machine clean with some manual steps. But it may come in at a lower price.

It is your choice which one to select but “here” is our article on “how to clean your ice maker” in a few easy steps. But it will tell you exactly how to do it.

Cost

You have quite a broad range of prices when it comes to buying an ice maker. It can cost you anywhere between $250 to $5000 depending upon the features and quality. Check your pocket before you go looking out for one.

Now that you know your needs, here is a list of tried and tested ice makers that we considered the best in the market. Let’s have a look at them.

Top Rated Undercounter Ice Makers Reviews

Keeping all of the above considerations in our mind, we have dug deep into the market and come up with these 10 options as the most reliable ones according to our research and tests.

1. Scotsman CU50GA Undercounter Ice Maker

Scotsman CU50GA Undercounter Ice Maker Consumer Reports

This sleek and smooth looking ice maker has a stainless steel door that sits well in most of the modern kitchens. It is basically a commercial ice maker, which means it can make a lot of ice. But it comes at a reasonable price and can be easily installed in a busy home kitchen too.

Let’s have a look at its features.

ColorSilver
Product Dimensions (LxWxH)22 x 14.88 x 34.38 inches
Production Rate64 lbs.
Capacity26 lbs.
Ice TypeGourmet
Cleaning MethodManual

Design

This stainless steel ice maker with its silvery smooth look is perfect for most kitchens. It has only around 14 inches of width which makes it perfect for small kitchens.

Ice Type

It produces the best type of ice, the gourmet ice. It is the clearest of all the available types. And the cubes this machine makes are huge; nowhere less than 1.5 inches. And because of their size, they melt slowly. They keep your drink cool for a longer time period.

Production and Capacity

This model is great for its production rate as well as its capacity to store ice. It makes above 60 lbs. of ice in a span of 24 hours. That means a lot of ice, with a capacity of 30 lbs.

The bin where the ice is collected is not refrigerated but simply insulated. The ice melts eventually if not used in time, but you don’t need to worry, that machine is making more ice for you. And it is working super fast.

Are you thinking about the water that came from the melting ice?

Com’on! That’s what the drainage hole is for. It will drain out all the extra water and your machine is working there for you, to make more ice and keep you cool.

By the way, it is always great to know your appliances to work with them in a better way. A little understanding is always appreciable and recommended because it keeps you and your machine happier. Here is a link to our article on Working of an Ice Maker and it has everything you need to know about your ice maker.

Noise Level

The machine does not make much noise when making ice. But when it is time to pour all that freshly made, beautiful ice in the bin it does make a sound.

But, keeping the size of the ice cubes, how can it do that silently? The ice will clank when it is poured. Can’t you just applaud, like we do… at a job so well done?

Installation

It comes with a manual to install the machine. We had to squeeze at the back of the machine to attach different pipes. It was a bit difficult but once done, it was totally worth the effort. This machine does need a drain hole nearby.

Overall it is not so difficult to install the machine, but if you are not very good at technicalities it is better to hire a plumber.

But, in case you are not good at these things and yet you do not want to pay those extra bucks to a plumber, you can learn it too. You need to trust yourself, and also a few instructions from our side and there is no reason you cannot make it possible.

Pro Tip: Never rely only on an article with general rules and information. Always follow the instructions given by the company before you follow anything else on the internet, be it a method of installing or cleaning your unit.

Pros

  • Great Production Rate
  • Good Capacity
  • Beautiful Look
  • Produces good quality ice

Cons

  • A Bit Loud

Consumers Report

The people who used this ice maker are greatly satisfied with its work. The machine produces a lot of ice and that too of the best quality. Some people do complain about the size being too big, you can consider your preference before making a choice.

The machine is loud for some but for most, it is okay considering the size of ice it is producing.

Most of the complaints about this machine have nothing to do with the manufacturing quality. Unfortunately, many customers received their packages mishandled. We wish you a good look for that. May you get your ice maker as safely delivered as we did ours.

Overall, it has got a 4 out of 5 stars rating from consumers.

Our Verdict

If you are looking for an ice maker with a high production rate and a large capacity, this one is a great option for you. With this ice maker at home, you will never run out of ice. The huge size of ice cubes and their crystal clear look can be a great addition to your drinks. But if you don’t like that size, look for another option. Our list can help you with that too.

On our scale, this ice maker gets an 8 out of 10 stars.

2. Maxx Ice MIM50P Undercounter Ice Maker

Maxx Ice MIM50P Undercounter Ice Maker Consumer Reports

Like the first one, the next ice maker on our list is also made of stainless steel. But, unlike the first one, it can be used as an undercounter ice maker and also as a free standing ice maker.

Like if you don’t want to install it under your counter because of some space issues you can install it anywhere in your house because it has feet underneath it.

Let’s dive deep in the rest of its features.

Product Dimensions23.4 x 14.6 x 32.6 inches
ColorSilver
Production Rate65 lbs
Capacity25 lbs
Ice TypeHalf Cubes
Cleaning MethodAutomatic

Design

As we mentioned above in the introduction, this is an undercounter ice maker, but it can also be used as a free standing unit.

Its sleek and silvery looks sit well in your kitchen with other appliances. A great thing about the design is its feet which enable it to stand straight on uneven floors

But, what we found the best about it is its reversible door with a long handle. You can install the door to open from left to right or from right to left. It gives you a lot of freedom with installation. It will be an even greater choice to have if you are a lefty.

The storage bin is also removable, which makes it easier to take it out and place it on the counter while you take that beautiful ice out.

A little more than 14 inches of width is good for small kitchens too.

And… It is still not the end.

This ice maker comes with a blue LED light in it that illuminates the interior and makes it easier to see into it. Plus it gives our machine a beautiful fancy look.

Ice Type

This built-in ice maker is designed to make half cubes ice. To talk about the exact dimensions, it is  3/4 x 3/4 x 1 inches. The quality of ice is also good as it is tasteless and odorless.

Production and Capacity

Whether you are buying it for commercial use or you have a busy kitchen, this ice maker is going to make your life easier. It can produce up to 65 lbs. of ice in a span of 24 hours and it has the capacity to store 25 lbs. of that perfectly made crystal clear ice.

But… you need to be ready for some manual work here. The ice that falls into the storage bin does not come in the form of cubes, rather, these are full sheets of ice falling in the bin. This can mislead the automated work of the ice maker.

The sheets of ice take up more space than the cubes. So the ice maker stops working before the bin is filled to its full capacity.

In case you need more ice than that, keep breaking up those sheets of ice so that the ice maker keeps working and fills the bin to its full capacity.

Like most of the ice makers, this one too has a non-refrigerated ice bin and the accumulated ice, if not used in time, melts eventually and the ice maker keeps on making new ice.

Noise Levels

This ice maker is almost quiet. It does not make much sound while working but you surely need to install it properly to achieve that quietness. If the waterline is kinked at the back, your ice maker is not gonna be happy with that.

Consequently, it will make you unhappy with some weird sucking sounds while filling.

Installation

The unit comes with elaborate instructions to install it. You can install it if you are really good at DIYs. But if not, better hire a professional plumber.

If you do not have a drain hole near the place you want to install your ice maker, you don’t need to worry here because this one comes with a built-in drain pump

Pros

  • Beautiful Look
  • Good Production Rate
  • LED Light
  • Built in Drain Pump
  • Low Budget

Cons

  • Low Capacity

Consumers Report

Most of the consumers who used this ice maker are happy with its work. It is coming at a lower price and with some better features than some other brands. People are getting a good thing for their money and who can’t be happy with that?

The only issue people are facing is its capacity. We talked about it in detail above. The whole sheets take up more space than individual cubes and the capacity is not used to its fullest.

On average this ice maker has secured a 3.8 out of 5 star rating.

Our Verdict

Our team finds this ice maker a good value for money. It provides good quality ice with a recommendable production rate. Its capacity is a drawback but if you need an ice maker to use it continuously, this cannot be a problem for you.

On the other hand, if you need ice all at once, to be used on special occasions, better look for another option. Our list has got something for everyone.

We give it a 7.5 out of 10 star rating.

3. Ice-O-Matic GEMU090 Undercounter Ice Maker

Ice-O-Matic GEMU090 Undercounter Ice maker consumer reports
Editor’s Rating:
9.4/10

The next on our list is an ice maker that makes Nugget Ice. It happens to be the most popular type of ice especially for those who love to chew it.

This under the counter ice maker can be a bit heavy on your pocket but it is totally worth it. Let’s see how!

BrandIce-O-Matic
ColorSilver
Ice TypeNugget/Pearl Ice
Production Rate 85 lbs.
Capacity22 lbs.
Cleaning MethodManual

Design

Like most of the ice makers, this one too has a silver front made of stainless steel

It has also got feet underneath that enable it to stand on uneven floors.

You can also use it as a free standing unit anywhere in your home or office and it looks great.

Unlike the other ice makers on our list, its handle is fixed horizontally on the front which gives it a unique, classy look

Ice Type

This undercounter ice maker is designed to make the most popular kind of ice, called nugget ice. Although it comes in many different names: pearl ice, pebble ice, sonic ice, pellet ice, all of it is the same thing.

It is soft and chewable ice that is made of ice flakes compressed together.

You might be wondering why this ice maker is so expensive.

So here is the reason:

Nugget ice cannot be produced by a simple ice maker. It requires complex design and technology. Consequently, the machine that houses that technology does not come at a low price.

You have to decide between a luxury treat or an easy budget.

Production and Capacity

This ice maker works fast and produces 85 lbs. of nugget ice per day. This means you can use it commercially for a bar or office or if you have a really busy kitchen, it can be of great use there as well.

Unfortunately, our beautiful ice maker does not have a lot of capacity as it can store only 22 lbs. of ice at a time. But if you are going to use that ice in small intervals, it cannot be a problem for you.

If you need more ice for a coming event you can pack the ice and store it in your freezer but if you need an ice maker only for this kind of events and large parties, it may not be a good option for you.

The storage bin is insulated but the ice will melt eventually if not used in time.

Noise Level

This undercounter ice maker is not going to disappoint you here either. It is pretty quiet and won’t bother you with its noise while it works.

Installation

The ice maker is delivered with a manual for installing it and it is better to get it installed by a professional plumber. You can challenge yourself to do it if you are good at such things but you must be ready with an installation kit because you are going to need it.

Another thing for your help here: you can install this ice maker in your kitchen or anywhere if you have a drain hole nearby. If not, you will have to buy a drain pump separately because that is not included in the package.

Pros

  • The Best Quality Ice
  • Great Production Rate
  • Unique Look

Cons

  • Low Capacity

Consumers Report

This ice maker has got some of the happiest customers. It works great at homes or commercial bars. The ice quality is matchless and it is fun to chew on it.

And these are the reasons it has secured 5 out 5 star ratings from most the users.

Our Verdict

If you are looking for a nugget ice maker, this is the best option for undercounter machines. It works fast, it is quiet, and it makes great quality ice.

It is a bit expensive but you have no choice if you are a nugget ice fan. That soft and chewable fun is not coming cheap bro!

Overall, we give it a 9.4 out of 10 stars rating on our list.

4. Gilati Upgraded Commercial Undercounter Ice Maker

Gilati Upgraded Commercial Under Counter Ice Maker Consumer Reports

Are you looking for an ice maker that covers up your needs and does not cost you too much? Here is the solution to your problem.

This undercounter machine makes a lot of ice with a pretty good capacity and many other features, all at a very reasonable price.

Let us start with a specs table and see with us what it has to offer.

ColorSilver
Dimensions15 x 17 x 31.5 inches
Ice TypeCube Ice
Production Rate120-130 lbs.
Capacity35 lbs.
Cleaning MethodAutomatic

Design

This undercounter ice maker also comes in silver colored stainless steel covering but its glass window gives it a different look and also allows you to peek into the ice maker.

Like some other models on our list, this too can be installed as a free standing unit anywhere in your home or office and the credit goes to its feet.

It has an LED operating system which is fixed on its front. This LED is also contributing to its good looks.

Another good thing about this ice maker is that it comes in white plastic wrap

If you ordered a silver Gilati model and you received a white one just don’t freak out. The sellers are really concerned about the safe delivery and that white wrap is an extra precaution to save it from dents and scratches. You can easily remove it to reveal that silver look.

Or… you can just keep it that way if it suits your kitchen. Let us be honest, that cover is so neatly wrapped that it can deceive anyone into believing it to be the actual color of the ice maker.

Ice Type

This ice maker makes good quality ice cubes.  The good thing about these cubes is that you can change their size according to your needs. You can easily use the ice cubes to make your iced-coffee using any instant coffee.

Production and Capacity

This ice maker makes a lot of ice and that too in as little time as12 to 20 minutes. It can produce 110 to 130 lbs. of ice in a span of 24 hours.

Talking about its capacity; it can store up to 35 lbs. of ice at a time.

And this is not all about it!

The machine is pretty automated which makes everything about it much easier to operate.

Your storage bin is full, the machine gives you a reminder.

If it is time to clean, the machine starts the process by itself.

Water is short, you are given a reminder.

You can also set a timer on it and the machine stops working at the time you have set.

Pretty interesting features… ain’t they?

Noise Levels

No, this machine is not loud either. It is really determined to meet all your expectations for a good ice maker.

Installation

It is completely easy to install this unit. If you are facing any kind of problem, that manual is there to help you. And if you have hired a professional plumber, he is hardly going to need that manual.

Just keep a drain pump prepared if you don’t have a drain hole close by because it is going to need one.

Here we would like to mention the amazing customer service of this built-in ice maker brand. They are deeply concerned about their customers’ satisfaction and performing an exceptionally good job.

If you face any kind of issues with your ice maker, you can contact them without a second thought and you will find them determined to resolve your issues.

Pros

  • Great Production Rate
  • Good Capacity
  • Budget Friendly
  • Amazing Customer Service
  • LED Controlled Panel

Cons

  • No Fancy Ice Type

Consumers Report

Most of the consumers of this undercounter ice maker are absolutely happy with it and it is not a riddle to know why. It produces a lot of ice which can be used in a home or on a commercial level. It has a lot of features to offer and yet it comes at a budget friendly price.

And the best thing about it is the customer service it comes with. Even if the customers are facing any kind of problem with their unit, the people at the back of this machine are more than happy to help them.

It has secured 4.3 out of 5 star ratings on average.

Our Verdict

If you use a lot of ice at your home or office and you are always buying some extra packs of ice, you can invest in this undercounter ice maker. It will not take up a lot of your space, it won’t cost you much and yet it will save you from the extra hassle of buying that ice every once or twice a week.

But, if you are looking for an ice maker that makes something fancy like nuggets or gourmet ice for that beautiful glass of cocktail, you need to raise your budget. This one is not gonna help you there.

Overall, we give it an 8 out 10 star rating on our scale.

5. Euhomy Commercial Ice Maker Machine

EUHOMY Commercial Undercounter Ice Maker Machine Consumer Reports

The next ice maker on our list is a relatively big, commercial ice maker. But it can be easily installed in a home kitchen too.

It is another amazing option if you want simple ice cubes from your undercounter machine.

But , the reason we gave this ice maker a place on our list, which is definitely not an easy place to have, is that it can be used outdoors too. You can install it in your outdoor kitchen,  garage, or even on your patio bar.

Let us see what else it has to offer without being heavy on your pocket.

ColorSilver
Dimensions17.52″D x 15.96″W x 31.3″H
Ice TypeCube Ice
Production Rate100 lbs.
Capacity33
Cleaning MethodManual

Design

A stainless steel silver front happens to be the most popular color of kitchen appliances and so is the color of this undercounter ice maker.

Most of the ice makers are around 15 inches wide but this one is close to 16 inches wide, so just keep the space of installation in mind before you make a purchase.

It comes with feet underneath that allow it to stand on uneven surfaces. And, like most of the undercounter ice makers, this one too can be installed as a free standing unit anywhere in your home, office, or bar.

And, as mentioned before, this ice maker is designed to be installed outdoors too. If you are planning to install it anywhere outside of your home or office, these small feet can be much more important than you think. Why?

Because they are going to balance that beautiful ice maker even if your flour is not so balanced.

It has got a glass window on the front so you can see all that frozen ice shining like diamonds in it. It is such a pleasure to see your machine doing its job so perfectly. Don’t you agree?

It has also got an LCD panel in front of it and you can easily control all the functions of your machine through it.

Ice Type

This ice maker does not make anything fancy. But you can depend on the quality of ice cubes it provides 24/7.

You can also control how hard or soft you like your ice to be. If you set the machine on a “hard” choice of ice it will take a few extra minutes to freeze it before it disposes the cubes to the storage bin.

Production and Capacity

This is a commercial undercounter ice maker, so the production rate must be good. And the machine knows it very well!

It produces 100 lbs. of ice in a span of 24 hours. And it only takes 12 to 15 minutes to freeze a batch of fresh ice.

It can easily store 33 lbs. of ice in its storage bin. And, like in most ice makers, its storage bin is not refrigerated. It is only insulated and the ice it stores will melt eventually and the water it produces drains out of the machine.

Pro Tips

Here we would love to share a bit of information that our experience allowed us to gain.

Firstly, if you are living in an area with frequent power cuts _unfortunately, as we do_  you will have to be a bit alert with this machine. Because if your power supply was interrupted, this machine is not going to start on its own even if the power is connected again. You will have to start it manually.

Secondly, this ice maker can show you an error on its LCD panel that says “E-2” and your machine would discontinue working.

DON’T FREAK OUT!

Just restart your unit and the problem will be solved. Just remember there is nothing to worry about. We have been using this ice maker for a year now and the problem occurred only twice.

Noise Level

You can call it a “quiet” ice maker. It does make some sound but you can expect that much from any machine in working condition.

Installation

Like all the other ice makers on our list, you can install it on your own, and you may call a professional plumber if you don’t feel like doing it yourself. Installation is pretty easy though.

Remember to keep a drain pump handy if you don’t have a drain hole near the machine. The water can be drained by gravity but if a gravity drain is not available, the ice maker will need to take help from a pump.

Unfortunately, this ice maker does not come with a built-in pump but we can’t really complain considering its price. Can you?

Pros

  • Great Production Rate
  • Good Capacity
  • Budget Friendly
  • Supports Outdoor Installation

Cons

  • Minor Functional Errors
  • No Fancy Type of Ice

Consumers Report

We are here to help the consumers of these products so we can’t add a product to our list if it has a good many dissatisfied customers. Can we?

So, this built in ice maker too has got a long list of satisfied customers. It works fast and makes a lot of ice. People are happy to have freshly frozen ice every time they open it to have some. And, it is one of the most budget friendly options available in the market.

Thousands of the customers who have used this machine, give it a 4.3 out 5 stars rating.

Our Verdict

Despite the few minor problems we faced while using this ice maker, it has gained a high rank in our opinion. The problems it makes can be easily solved but the job it is doing is exceptional. Its production rate is great and it works well even in the hot environment of a garage.

If you are looking for nothing fancy in regard to the ice type, and you need a machine to work well in your outdoor kitchen or bar, this machine can be your go-to choice.

On our scale, it gets an 8.5 out of 10 stars rating.

Design

This built in ice maker is covered in stainless steel sheet and thus has a silver look.

Its super neat look can easily be a part of a minimalist kitchen. Its extra long handle gives it a dandy appearance we are so in love with. And…. that beautiful door is reversible.

What does that mean? Well, we did mention that before if you remember. But, we can tell you if you don’t. It means you can install the door to open either way; from left to right or from right to left. Interesting, isn’t it?

And very helpful too, especially if you are a lefty and all those machines keep coming with a door to be opened from left to right!

It comes with adjustable feet and can be installed as a free unit anywhere in your home or office.

And… this is not all!

The looks of this ice maker are not going to disappoint you anywhere.

It has a blue LED light that illuminates the interior of the ice maker when you open the door. With all that beautiful, crystal clear ice and a blue light passing through it, don’t you think it can be a perfect scene from Frozen

Ice Type

This ice maker makes slab ice cubes. Of course, the quality of ice depends upon the water you feed your machine. The ice is produced in sheets that break into cubes when they fall into the storage bin but sometimes they don’t.

You can smash them with the metal scoop that comes with the ice maker and they do break quite easily.

Production and Capacity

This ice maker produces 65 lbs. of ice in 24 hours and it can store 25 lbs. in the storage bin.

But, like most ice makers, the storage bin is not a freezer and the ice melts eventually if not used in time.

No worries! That machine is making more ice for you.

Noise Levels

This ice maker works smoothly while doing its job. But it gets a bit loud when it is draining that water from the melted ice in the storage bin.

Installation

The process of installation is not very difficult but it does require some technicalities. You can do it by yourself if you are good at such stuff or hire a plumber if you are not.

Another good thing about this unit is that it comes with a built-in drain pump. To tell you the truth, it is the pump that is guilty of making noise in this ice maker. Otherwise, it is a pretty quiet machine.

Pros

  • Aesthetically Pleasing
  • Built in Drain Pump
  • Good Production Rate
  • Reasonable Capacity

Cons

  • A Bit Loud

Consumers Report

This undercounter ice maker has been successful in satisfying most of its consumers. It makes good ice and sits beautifully with the interior of a modern kitchen.

There are a few unhappy customers too. They are annoyed by the sheets of ice that do not break into cubes on their own. And some are complaining about the noise its pump is making. But for most of the customers, these things are negligible in front of the pros this ice maker has to offer.

On average, this ice maker has secured a 4.1 out of 5 stars rating.

Our Verdict

This is a quality undercounter ice makers and one of the best available in the market. It makes good ice and with a recommendable production rate and capacity. And… It has some really good looks.

So, if you are looking for a quality built, fine looking ice maker, you can certainly go for it. But, if it is not only the look of the ice maker but also of the ice it makes too, you may need to think again. The ice it makes is simple cubes and nothing fancy. You will have to raise your budget for that requirement.

We have given it a 7.5 out of 10 stars on our scale.

It has a reversible door that gives you a lot of freedom concerning the place to install it.

It comes with adjustable feet that enable it to stand on uneven floors and also allow you to install it as a free standing unit anywhere around your home or office, or even outdoors too.

Yes! You heard that right!

This pretty little precious thing can be installed outdoors too.

And still this is NOT all!

What makes it the most special item on our list is still to be mentioned.

This ice maker is also a freezer. This means the ice in its storage bin DOES NOT MELT even if you are not using it. The unit stops working once the storage bin is filled and that means it is no longer using power to constantly make new ice.

AND… Because the ice is not melting, you do not need to attach this machine to a drain.

Are you impressed?

If not, continue reading and you eventually will!

Ice Type

No, this ice maker is not making an ordinary kind of ice cubes or ice slabs. There are beautiful, shiny, and clear crescents coming out of it. Remember the half-moon type we mentioned in the beginning of the article? Yes! It produces those half moons that do not melt quickly and keep your drink cold for longer.

We told you beforehand. You will be impressed!

Production and Capacity

It makes a decent amount of ice that is enough for moderate household or commercial usage. You can get 22 lbs. of ice in a span of 24 hours and it can store just as much in its storage bin.

Fortunately the ice it has stored will be there whenever you need it and you will have plenty of it.

Noise Levels

No disappointments here as well. The unit is perfectly quiet and works well without ruining your peace.

Installation

The ice maker is pretty easy to install. You can install it anywhere from 2 to 4 hours depending on your skill level.

You do not need a drain for this machine. So that takes half the effort away and you can set it up pretty quickly.

Pros

  • It Comes With a Freezer
  • Decent Production Rate
  • Good Capacity
  • Unique Ice Type
  • Reversible Door
  • No Drain Required
  • Quiet

Cons

  • A Bit Slow

Consumers Report

The consumers are amazed with the quality and quantity of the features it comes in with and that too at the most reasonable price. They are loving the freezer feature and how well it stores the ice. The crescent shaped ice does not melt too quickly and serves its purpose in the best possible way.

The only problem some people have faced is that the machine is a bit slower than most of the other ice makers. But this inconvenience is nothing for all the great features it is offering.

Overall it has been successful to get a 4.3 out of 5 stars rating from its customers.

Our Verdict

If you are not looking for an ice maker that makes a ton of ice each day, we recommend this ice maker to you. Because it has got almost everything else one can wish for in an undercounter ice maker.

Adjustable feet, reversible door, good capacity, unique ice type, and, to top it all, frozen storage has made it a perfect choice for everyone.

It has got a 8.5 out of 10 stars rating on our scale.

Some Other Recommendations

The market of under-counter ice makers is a huge one but it is not old. We can say that brands are trying to make the best machines but there is still room to improve them.

We put all our effort to bring you the best products available in the market but still, we could not provide you with all the features we would have liked to in these undercounter ice makers.

For instance, there are not many options available for an undercounter ice maker with a freezer, different unique types of ice, or built in filtration system. These features can make it a dream come true. But these dreams still need a bit of work before they are realized.

Some ice makers are designed to make many types of fancy ice but most of these are available in top counter ice makers.

How Does an Ice Maker Work?

Ice makers share their basic mechanism with your air conditioner or refrigerator. But they are different in some aspects too.  Here is a complete guide to know your ice maker better.

Step-by-Step Process

  • An ice maker pumps water from the reservoir or the water supply line to the ice making trays or metal prongs/pistons.
  • Water is turned into the ice with the help of cold metal trays or prongs.
  • Once made, the ice is automatically dispatched to the storage bin.
  • The ice is stored in the insulated bin but it melts if not used in time.
  • The water from the melted ice is either drained (if you have an under-counter ice maker) or stored back in the water tank (in case of a portable ice maker) to be used again.
  • The unit automatically stops making ice once the storage basket is full.

You can read the process in full detail “here” and know your ice maker better.

How to Install an Ice Maker?

It is definitely a bit tacky to install an undercounter ice maker in your home but certainly, it is not impossible. You can do it with some patience and a bit of guidance on how to install an ice maker.

Step-by-Step Process

  • Read instructions from the manufacturer carefully.
  • Unbox the unit carefully.
  • Keep the tools ready; as you are going to need a ranch, a screwdriver, and a nut driver.
  • Open the rear panel of your unit and attach the hoses of the water line and drain line to your ice maker.
  • Connect the water supply line.
  • Set the drain hose.
  • Make it level.
  • Plug In.

What to Do if Ice Maker is Not Working?

If your ice maker suddenly stops working, here are a couple of things you can do to fix it. Because, more often than not, there is ice stuck somewhere in your unit, or another minor issue you can solve all by yourself.

Here are some common issues you might be facing along with their solutions.

  • See if the power supply to your ice maker is interrupted. Try turning it On if it is not or reset it.
  • Check if the water supply line is kinked or clogged. If yes, fix it because your ice maker needs an uninterrupted water supply.
  • See if unwanted ice is blocking the way of water to the ice trays. If there it is, remove it.
  • Your storage bucket might be sending the wrong signal of “full capacity”. Make it right and it will start working again.
  • The optimal temperature of your ice maker is 0 degrees Fahrenheit. If this is not set on your thermostat, you need to reset it.
  • Have you changed your water filter in the past 9 months? If not, that might be the problem.
  • Does your ice maker need a deep cleaning?

These might be some reasons behind an ice maker that has stopped working. You can read them in detail “here”.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why do I need a water filter attached to my ice maker?

A water filter can improve the quality of the ice and the life of the ice maker. The quality of ice depends on the water you feed the machine and a water filter can purify your water before it is turned into ice.

Why do I need a drain for my ice maker?

Most of the ice makers store ice in an insulated bin. This type of storage bin helps the ice stay frozen for longer hours but if it is not used, it melts eventually.

The ice makers need a drain to dispose of water that comes from melted ice. But there are ice makers available that work as a freezer too. In these units, ice does not melt and so they do not need a drain.

How difficult is it to install an ice maker?

For all the under-counter ice makers you need to provide a water supply and for most of them, you need to provide a drain. If you can attach these things to your unit by yourself, you are good to go and help yourself installing it in your home or office.

But, if you think you are not good enough for the job you can hire a professional plumber and he will do it for you for some extra dollars. Other than that, there is no rocket science involved.

Which type of ice is the best?

It all depends on your requirement. Some types of ice are used to chill your drink only, others are there to make it look elite too. You can read it in detail on our buying guide where all the ice types are described with their usage.

What if my ice maker stops anytime?

There can be many reasons behind a faulty ice maker but more often than not you can fix them by yourself. Sometimes it can only be a kink in the water supply line. At others, some frozen passages can be the reason behind the problem.

Many times resetting your machine can solve the issue. Or maybe you need to check if your filter needs to be replaced.

If the machine is working and the water supply is hindered, will it cause damage to the machine?

Yes. It sure will damage the machine.
